About the Department of Biochemistry

The Department of Biochemistry is committed to cutting-edge research and to offering an outstanding biochemistry curriculum compliant with international standards. Our laboratories are located at the Irchel Campus in Zurich.

Our Motto

Dedicated to Protein Science

Our Mission

  • to be leading in protein technology and structural biology
  • to conduct cutting edge research on an internationally competitive level
  • to provide excellent teaching
  • to develop the next generation of leaders in protein biochemistry
  • to contribute to the understanding of fundamental biological processes and mechanisms
  • to encourage collaborations with industry since our research is significant for medical and clinical application

Our Research

Our research is focused on the functional investigation of proteins, using biophysical, biochemical and structural approaches. Currently, the department houses six research groups. Thanks to the development of new technologies and the subsequent acquisition of patents relevant for medical applications, several spin-off companies evolved from the department.

Our Teaching

Our department provides education in biochemistry for science and medical students, as well as for PhD students and postdoctoral fellows. Our training ranges from lectures and seminars to practical courses and individual research project coaching. Our aim is to prepare our students most efficiently for a successful career.

Department Members

  • between 180 and 200
  • more than 50% are Postdocs and Ph.D. students
  • more than 60% of our members are from foreign countries

Finance

  • more than 65% of our funding is derived from third-party grants
  • major sources of funding are the Swiss National Science Foundation, the European Research Commission, Private Foundations and Companies
  • total expenses in 2016: > 13 Mio. CHF
