Amedeo Caflisch

Amedeo Caflisch has been a Full Professor of Computational Structural Biology at the Department of Biochemistry since 2001. Since August 2020 he is also Head of Department.

The gene-to-structure research activities focus on the development of small molecule ligands for studying the function of proteins involved in epitranscriptomics (m6A-RNA writer and readers) and epigenetics (readers of acetylated lysine). The most potent and selective ligands are developed (from in silico design to in vivo validation) into anti-cancer compounds.

Amedeo Caflisch studied Theoretical Physics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich where he graduated in 1991. From 1992 until 1994 he was a postdoctoral fellow in the research group of Prof. Martin Karplus at the Harvard Department of Chemistry and Biology. Amedeo Caflisch joined the Department of Biochemistry of the University of Zurich in 1995 as a senior research assistant and was appointed assistant professor in 1996.
